The Strange Case of ParkerVision
PROMISING THE BIGGEST BREAKTHROUGH in wire-less since Marconi, Jeffrey L. Parker's company ParkerVision has enjoyed the backing of sharp investors like Leucadia National and a member of the Barron's Roundtable. It has also lost $160 million over 17 years without delivering a successful product. So the tiny Jacksonville, Fla.-based firm has attracted generations of short-sellers. The shares (ticker: PRKR) have bounced plenty, between 3 and 56, and were recently going for 10 bucks each. The company's fruitless persistence has fed a strange online debate. A bear with the ominous screen name "cassandra-oracle" runs a Website called PV Notes that meticulously pulls the wings off ParkerVision's claims of a revolutionary radio amplifier technology. PV Notes even pays to show its link (www.pvnotes.com) when you Google the word "ParkerVision." Defending ParkerVision in hundreds of postings, meanwhile, is a bull named "urspond" who seems to know a lot about the involvement of Leucadia (LUK), a financial firm known more for value investing than tech speculation.
Editorial: ‘Gifted’ funds lost in space
Therefore, parents must invest time and energy into learning how to create a great educational plan suited to your child's UNIQUE needs. Parents do not have to accept an ep duplicate of your neighbor's. I want my children in the environment most likely to develop them to potential. I do not find it my child's job to tutor some other child during the school day or to do crossword puzzles daily. Iwant my child challenged and excited to learn, not coddled and unexposed to failure. Gifted children deserve to learn something new every day as does any child. Does that happenfor gifted children when they are poorly served?Margaret Delacy, my favorite advocate, asked a question, "Why are we teaching these kids the ABCswhen they already know how to read?" The best way to make sure yur child is not wasting time in school is that set of papers called an educational plan.
Citizen scientists track climate change
You'll join thousands of others across the country who are recording the first buds to open, the first leaves to unfurl this spring. Your data will be used by atmospheric and climate scientists, botanists and ecologists who want your help in tracking signs of change. Project Budburst is a national effort designed by scientists who need the data to plan for the effects of climate change on natural ecosystems. It was launched in mid-February. Keeping track of the timing of natural events is a science called phenology. ''Natural events can be anything from when a plant leafs out, blooms or sets fruit to when birds migrate and insects hatch out,'' explained Kay Havens, director of the Institute for Plant Conservation at the Chicago Botanic Garden. Havens is on the committee that designed Project Budburst.
