Alan Gevins' top-floor corner office at SAM Technology looks out on the Financial District. This isn't bad real estate for a scientist who has gotten by on grants for 35 years. What he needs now is for one of these capitalists to look back and see the market for Gevins' brain meter. "The little black box is a device that measures signals in the brain that regulate attention and memory. There is a headset and a notebook computer and the rest is all embedded in the software that's on our server. There are no wires from the person to the computer. We call it the SAM exam. It stands for Sustained Attention and Memory brain function exam. The company is called SAM Technology. I named it after Uncle Sam, because all of our funding comes from federal research grants. The point is there is no good medical test now that measures how clearly someone can think, how well their brain is functioning.

Rapist fled through unlocked door at jail
A twice-convicted rapist facing life in prison remained at large Thursday after dashing through an unlocked door at the Jim Hogg County Sheriff's Office late Tuesday night. Abel Morin, 24, of San Diego, Texas, who was sentenced to five concurrent life terms in prison on Monday, has not been spotted since he escaped shortly before midnight in Hebbronville while being moved between cells. Morin was being held in Hebbronville as part of a problem prisoner exchange agreement between Jim Hogg and Duval counties. He escaped hours after being returned to Hebbronville by Duval County deputies. "My officers took him and placed him in the holding cell in Jim Hogg. They removed the handcuffs, belly chain and shackles, and left him in the holding cell," said Bruno Valdez, chief deputy in Duval County.
