| Fans, foes clash on Kaiser parking plan
A proposed 270-space parking lot for Kaiser Permanente Medical Center ran into considerable opposition during a public meeting Thursday night in San Rafael. More than half of the two dozen speakers voiced outright opposition to the project or serious concerns regarding the environmental effects, visual changes, noise - or disbelief that the 2.5-acre lot would not increase traffic in the neighborhood. About 75 people, including San Rafael City Manager Ken Nordhoff and Marin County Schools Superintendent Mary Jane Burke, attended the meeting. "Is building a parking lot in our best interest?" asked longtime Terra Linda resident Lee Fitzgerald. The comments will be taken into consideration for a report written by a seven-member advisory committee of representatives from local neighborhood associations, schools and parent groups appointed by Dixie School District trustees.
Upscale new Centex neighborhood set apart from rest of Carolina Bay
Mention the Carolina Bay development, and people familiar with it might cite the main, lighted entrance off U.S. Highway 17 or that the 1,800-home village stretches from Savannah Highway to Glenn McConnell Parkway. But they may not realize that just one neighborhood at the present time can be reached via Glenn McConnell. It is Essex at Carolina Bay, which at least for now is not connected to the rest of the community. .
Monday wild card
And so, I'm making a plea to all of you to help me out with material. Apart from not being as smart, talented, or handsome as Dave (above), I have two other key disadvantages: I live and work in Spokane, and don't get over to North Idaho much. So I don't have much of a handle (pun intended) on the local political scene. I try to keep up with the blog, but I'm not going to sit here and pretend to know what I'm talking about when it comes to Gozzer Ranch yacht wars or Marty Fortier. I'm doing this in addition to other work, so I'm not able to spend much time crusing around looking for things to post. And so - your help this week is crucial to keeping the blog flowing. Don't be shy about suggesting items to post, and please don't worry about insulting my intelligence or whatever by explaining at length why a particular post is noteworthy.
3 killed in weekend shootings in Twin Cities
The 18-year-old, who was from Bloomington, and another man with him at the time of the shooting were members of the Vatos Locos gang, said the report, which police later said they released accidentally. Bloomington authorities assisted Richfield police with the drive-by shooting near Interstate 494 and Portland Avenue S. about 6 p.m. An officer found Ortega lying in the street. He rolled Ortega on his back and saw that he wasn't breathing and had what appeared to be two gunshot wounds to the left side of his chest, the report said. The victim did not have a pulse. The officer performed CPR on Ortega after an attempt to administer a defibrillator failed, according to the report. Richfield police Lt. Jay Henthorne said it's too early to determine a motive for the case.
