| United Way feeling Quaker's absence
The same domino effect from the Quaker closing that caused the auto sales and service company Al & Paul's to sell its Davol Street shop has hurt the United Way, he said. Al & Paul's will reopen on Oak Grove Avenue with a new focus on rentals. Quaker laid off 900 workers last July before closing. Last year, the United Way raised $1,825,000. The organization did not set a specific goal for 2007, but hoped to match last year's total. Only $1,775,000 is projected to be raised by the end of the campaign, Jan. 31, Horne said. Five years ago, Quaker was the largest contributor to the fund, raising $210,000. Its contributions fell dramatically when its work force was cut in the following years, Horne said. Quaker's closing also means that more people have turned to SER-Jobs for Progress, an organization that provides employment training and educational services and is one of the United Way's largest beneficiaries.

I had a hard time getting to sleep last night. I was flipping around the tv and landed on ESPN. I figured that listening to more in depth coverage of Tom Brady's ankle would be tv's version of Ambien, it would help me get my zzzzs. However, I made one fatal flaw, one that many mortals in Greek mythology made when looking at a Gorgon, I took a peek at the scroll on the bottom of the screen. There were two categories, NFL and SANTANA. Much to my astonishment, the Twins had agreed to send Johan Santana to the Mets for a hamburger today (pending the Mets contract extension for Santana). Well, maybe not a hamburger, but the Mets package of Phil Humber, Carlos Gomez, Deolis Guerra and Kevin Mulvey. Mulvey, wasn't that Jerry called his girlfriend who's name he couldn't remember. Oh no, that was Mulva.

He hit .218 in 97 close & late plate appearances last year, including 22 strikeouts. The Braves as a team hit .257 in close & late situations. And nobody would think that the Braves are "over-relying" on Hampton this year. .

Oh, dont mention it, Duranchon brushed her off. I actually was getting paid before Christopher died to stay here and take care of Valencia. But she never knew it.
Mary Ann was shocked: What?
Close your mouth, Duranchon said. I didnt ask for the money. He and I entered into an agreement. I was going to leave and go back South, and he paid me to stay here.
