Freshman Randy Fontanez was a solid starter for USF, pitching five innings, giving up one run while scattering four hits and striking out one, but did not factor in the decision.

"Randy is a freshman and you've got to like what you see with him," added Prado. "It's a matter of those young guys like Fontanez gaining experience. We have a lot of those young guys and they're going to be great pitchers for us."

USF opened the game in the bottom of the first when junior Brian Hobbs doubled to the gap in right center, scoring sophomore shortstop Addison Maruszak, who reached base on a single to left earlier in the inning.

USF got back on the board in the sixth when Hobbs, who doubled to the right field wall in the previous at-bat, scored on a Corey Johnson double to cut the ISU lead to two runs.

I was deeply saddened learning of the death of longtime 11Alive reporter Neil Craig ("Neil Craig, 69, veteran newscaster who took his job at WXIA as a 'calling'," Obituaries, Feb. 6). Neil was the ultimate local reporter. Every good news organization has a small core of reporters like Neil who are the journalist soldiers who go anywhere, do anything, to get a story and are always fully reliable.

Neil was there when 11Alive was in the "smoke and mirrors" stage of its growth. He was also there when saner management turned it into one of the finest newsrooms in town. I was privileged to work around such a journalist. An annual Neil Craig Award should be created to honor his type of local, hardworking, no-nonsense reporting. In years to come, TV reporters like Neil would be honored with an award bearing his name.

Bird aficionados participate in Christmas surveys

Seward was one of 10 sites in Nebraska, where dozens of volunteers flocked to count birds in mid-December to early January. Now in its 108th year, the Christmas Bird Count helps track wintering bird populations and helps the conservation community make decisions for bird and habitat conservation. Fifteen volunteers participated in the Seward-area bird count on Dec. 15. They identified 69 species and counted 9,340 birds.Despite the cold weather, volunteers also spotted a high number of raptors, including the highest count ever for red-tailed hawks (88). They also saw four sharp-shinned hawks, five Cooper’s hawks and five Merlin falcons.Gubanyi said he’s noticed a substantial drop in the black-capped chickadee population in the Seward area, just like in other parts of the Midwest.

Fresh trouble for Sanjay

Denying the reports that they married as she was pregnant, in an exclusive interview to HT Café, Dutt said, “There's no truth to this rumour. Trust me, Manyata isn't pregnant."

On the question of the legality of his marriage, Dutt maintained, “My marriage is legal. The media has the photographs. We have spoken about it." At present, the Dutt couple is staying at their 11th floor home in Imperial Heights, Bandra away from the media glare.

But the officials in the sub-registrar's office said the documents have been sent to the Law Department for “scrutiny".

An inquiry has been ordered into the validity of the residence certificate Manyata has submitted. According to G P Nair, Collector of South Goa, the certificate didn't bear the signature of the senior official issuing it.
