Pearson happy with first point

Saints were conceding a lot of needless free kick around the edge of their own box but were fortunate the delivery from Morris was so poor.

Pearson's side were too often just lumping the ball forward aimlessly and were showing little sign of much invention to break Scunthorpe down.

In fairness the home side were only a little better in what had been a very poor first half all round. But they were thrown a lifeline when they were awarded a penalty.

Saints couldn't quite get a corner clear and as Paterson tracked across the area with the ball Jhon Viafara brought him down.

On 40 minutes Crosby ran up to take the spot kick but Davis got down to his right to save it but the ball just came back out into the path of Crosby who made no mistake the second time round and made it 1-0.

More than that, they want to rediscover the romance and theatre that used to transform a scruffy tin stadium in Shepherds Bush into a place of joy and wonder. 'Football should be an event,' Briatore declares. 'Our mission is to make it entertainment.'

Dramatic changes have already occurred up in the directors' suite at Loftus Road. There's an espresso machine, for one. Then there are the elegant women with their tiny behinds and enormous sunglasses. And the dress-sense has improved immeasurably. It is impossible to calculate the acreage of cashmere in the room.

The suite itself has not changed since the days of 'QPR rule, OK?', those glorious mid-Seventies when Stan Bowles and Dave Thomas humiliated defenders for fun. The anaemic wood panelling is of a hue that would make any airport hotel proud and the royal blue carpet gives off the reassuring spark of man-made fabric.

PM's warning: Prepare for inflation pain

The Australian Industry Group will also warn today that economic growth is likely to fall short of 3 per cent over the next 10 years.

"All the advice I receive from Treasury is that growth will continue at a relatively strong pace," Mr Swan told the Nine Network.

"It may slow a little but if you go out there and talk to employers, there are labour shortages, there are skill shortages, business investment is strong and, of course, we've received the news over the past week that there will be further increases in international commodity prices, which will be a substantial benefit to this country."

But Mr Turnbull accused Mr Swan of failing to address the relationship between inflation, interest rates and employment.

"What he's not prepared to do is come clean and admit that his policy is one of encouraging the Reserve Bank to raise interest rates aggressively," Mr Turnbull told The Australian.

Come on Like the Fast Lane is the Silos' third effort to feature Salas-Humera, bassist Drew Glackin and drummer Konrad Meissner. No longer featuring the country-tinged elements of past efforts, the current Silos are a roots-rock power trio that has forsaken some of the emotion for sheer sonic push. The opening cut "Behind Me Now" (co-written with Steve Wynn of the Dream Syndicate) is a muscular mix of primitive rock and edgy psychedelia. Salas-Humera has always been a writer prone to ambiguous details that explore the shadows of relationships and tracks such as "Fall on Your Knees" and "I Won You Won" continue his dynamic style of putting forward and pulling back.

Certainly the band's best effort as a trio, Fast Lane is a Viagra-enhanced indie rock record, proof positive that even (obscure) alt-country legends can age gracefully and continue to be relevant.

Occupational Hazard: Updates on Yao, Butler, G. Wallace

In his Washington Post blog, reporter Ivan Carter reported that, after speaking with trainers and doctors, he found that "there is a real difference of opinion as to whether surgery is an effective way to repair a labral tear." He also wrote that surgery was never mentioned as an option for Butler and that the team is optimistic he will have an unspecified period of rest, which Carter speculated could be between one and three weeks. Plan on sitting Butler for at least next week and check in here as we have more updates.
