| Religious bigotry factor in politics
In South Carolina, the conservatives couldn't decide whether it was better to vote their religion or their politics, giving McCain the win.Florida came up. The press had anointed McCain the man, a winner, a hero. Giuliani, who expected to come into Florida as the press's favorite child, had now been eclipsed by McCain. He was now "the loser," who miscalculated. Even though Huckabee got less than half the votes of Romney, if Romney could have just picked up 37 percent of Huckabee's voters, he would have beaten McCain. Remember the surveys which found that about half of Protestants had an unfavorable view of Mormons, and Huckabee already had shown a talent for exploiting this bigotry. On Super Tuesday, West Virginia was reported early. Romney won the popular vote, but didn't get enough to take the state by primary rule.McCain and Huckabee's campaigns huddled behind closed doors and McCain threw his voters over to Huckabee, giving him the state. Why? Because they both despise Romney.
Anita Creamer: Gender shift
For countless local families answering a knock on the door in the middle of the night, the face of death is female. Nine of 12 Sacramento County deputy coroners are women and so is one of the three assistant coroners who supervise them. "There's been a total gender shift," says Assistant Coroner Ed Smith, a 23-year veteran of the department. The same trend holds true across the country, not only in death-investigation work but also in the fields of forensic pathology and crime-scene investigation. .
Will 'Amnesty' Sink McCain?
The perennial controversy over what to call McCain's amnesty is silly. Every program in the world that has allowed illegal immigrants to stay has been called an "amnesty." McCain himself called it "amnesty" as recently as May 2003, when he told the Tucson Citizen "I think we can set up a program where amnesty is extended to a certain number of people who are eligible … Amnesty has to be an important part ..." But once the focus-group results were in, "amnesty" became a four-letter word. ...[snip] Real Straight Talk would be to say "Sure, it's an amnesty, but we don't really have any choice" ... P.S.: The McCain, post-focus-group argument is that it can't be "amnesty" if it has some requirements--e.g., to pay a fine, learn English, etc. But it turns out that Ronald Reagan's 1986 "comprehensive" reform, which he and everyone else called an "amnesty," had requirements too, including payment of fees.
Coming Soon: SR to Release E-mail Exchanges ... (Not so fast...)
Update: After reviewing the messages and our options (none good), we've decided not to post the messages. Here's the situation: Of the 50 messages, a few have explicit photos embedded in the message. We can't publish those photos (one shows a toddler's penis). We also have a strong ethical policy against blurring or otherwise manipulating photos. Some of the messages are completely innocuous. The rest of the messages only refer to attachments. Those attachments are explicit, so we can't publish them. We've also gone through each message to blur e-mail addresses for privacy reasons. So, if we don't publish any of the explicit images, and we refuse to blur, crop or otherwise alter them, all we're left with is a bunch of forwarded messages that say things like "take a look at this!" We decided that did not advance the story in any significant way.
Electronic Voting
Steven Freeman's Presentation On Stolen US Elections (5 comments) Here's a video crash course on election fraud for those of you who are waking up to the fact of election fraud but can't find anything in the mainstream press. Steven Freeman, award-winning professor at the University of PA, author of "Was the 2004 Presidential Election Stolen?", spoke before the National Latino Congreso in Los Angeles last week and laid it all out quite clearly and succinctly. Watch this and pass it on. Thursday, October 11: Nancy Tobi: Pulling Up the Stone: Patriots at Work This is a citizen patriots movement demanding real elections, using real paper ballots, counted by real people. Stone by stone, we are building an old fashioned stone wall of defense around our American Republic. (More...) .
Google, Yahoo! could link up with DVR pioneer TiVo
TiVo is in talks with internet search giants Google and Yahoo! over a possible deal aimed at bridging television and the web. The talks are still fluid and could result in a number of outcomes, two sources familiar with the negotiations said. One scenario that's been discussed would see TiVo partner with Google or Yahoo! on a new service that would let consumers search for videos on the web and then watch them on their television sets, according to one person with knowledge of the talks, who spoke on condition of anonymity. A second person familiar with the talks said TiVo has held talks with both Google and Yahoo! about a potential equity investment, including the possibility of an outright acquisition. Any deal would likely be exclusive, this source said.
